Warehouse Management Systems Increase Operation Performance

When business is booming, it can be easier to overlook the inefficiencies and inaccuracies that infiltrate operations.  But those issues become blaringly obvious when the business climate takes a negative turn like it has in recent years.  Many companies learned this first-hand when they reduced staff to become leaner and flawed processes continued to negatively impact their bottom line. So, how can a company get to the core of operation issues, whether or not these problems are visible? One of the best, proven ways to help your business run at its highest potential regardless of the state of the economy is investing in a warehouse management system (WMS).

Over the first half of this year, 15 DMSi companies have investigated how DMSi/Majure Data’s WMS can streamline their overall operation. Now, many of them are seeing measurable improvement in the economy and are evaluating options that allow them to stay lean. “With WMS, our customers have all experienced 20 percent or better productivity improvements and are able to do more with less,” said Jim Houser, account executive for Majure Data. “That coupled with providing better customer service, near perfect inventory accuracy and the elimination of physical inventories are all very compelling reasons companies are choosing this technology.”

DMSi and Majure Data recently received commitments from Texas Plywood & Lumber Co. and DW Distribution to implement Majure Data’s RF Navigator WMS solution.  Both companies cited the realization that to be as competitive as possible, while providing substantially better customer service, they would have to change the way they do business. “In a nutshell, we chose the RF Navigator because the automation and streamlining of processes will ensure that operational bottlenecks are eliminated, which will increase productivity,” said Missy Isom, vice president of systems and quality for Texas Plywood & Lumber Co.

DW Distribution was very familiar with WMS and had seen tremendous strides from order fulfillment and inventory management in the 11 years they had been running a WMS system. “We believe we could increase our productivity levels and employee engagement with the tools Majure Data provides,” explained Steve George, vice president of IT and HR for DW Distribution. “Majure Data has a more efficient interface between their WMS and our current DMSi ERP system. This will allow us to increase the visibility of our warehousing efforts through more efficient processes. Our daily warehouse key performance indicators and productivity reporting will assist to determine our labor requirements. This will help us serve our loyal and dedicated customers.”

A paper-based/manual intensive warehouse is a thing of the past, and the RF Navigator System allows building material companies to be more competitive. “I don’t know any business that stayed in business working with a paper-based office,” Houser added. “In 20 years, it will be the same story for companies not using WMS and it is because the system provides a hard/tangible return on investment.”
